Beating hair breakage

Hi there,    If there is one thing that breaks the heart of anyone trying to grow hair, it is hair breakage. I cannot explain how sad I feel each time I see broken strands of hair on my palms or worse still on my comb. Hair breakage is what prevents us from getting our desired length and or fullness and must be dealt with severely. Since I began my natural hair journey I have learnt a lot about this common problem and I'm glad to say that knowledge is power! I'm beginning to see little or no breakage and I'm bursting with info to share!!! What causes hair breakage? Dryness, over manipulation, combing recklessly, loss of hair protein, dehydration, over moisturising, shampooing too much, uv damage from the sun, heat styling, sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, dyeing your hair etc. Things I never even thought about were truncating my hair growth hustle and I had no clue. Now though things are different. I know what I must do to protect my hair and in extension yours too :-)...

Dealing with Single Strand Knots

Hi there,    So like I whined about in my last post I have been having lots and lots of Single Strand Knots. They are so annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought trimming my hair would get rid of them but I was wrong. They are back again. In light of this I have done some of research on this issue and here are my findings: Dealing with Single strand knots(SSKs) Single Strand Knots also known as fairy knots occur when a single strand of hair ties a knot in itself or gets adjacent hairs all tied up forming a ball or knot that is sometimes impossible to unravel. Single strand knots are a hallmark of kinky coily hair(I cannot tell you how pained I was to  learn that my natural hair will always be plagued by these little devils) In spite of the fact that they are inevitable they can also be dealt with some success with these tips: Avoid wash and go styles(say whaaat?!?!?! no more 'fro?) Unfortunately shrinkage encourages SSks. As your hair shri...

Grow your hair fast!! The INVERSION METHOD hairxperiment

Hi there,     I heard about this method some weeks ago and I have been dying to try it out, just to see if it actually works. I checked You tube and some other black hair care blogs and the claims were the same: Grow 1 inch of hair in just 7 days !!!! I knew I had to try it out. I was a little bit scared because all the blogs and vlogs kept cautioning anyone who cares to  try it about possible health risks and contra indications. After just the slightest bit of hesitation I gave in to my curiosity and I tried it out starting from 1st-7th October. It  felt like hard work and I was so glad when it ended. The Inversion method In simple terms this method is when You  reverse blood flow from other parts of your body to your head by inclining your head at a low angle coupled with a hot oil massage of your scalp. You can only do it for 7 consecutive days and no more than once every 4 weeks. CAUTION : Do not attempt if you are pregnant, have hernia, lo...

Did you know?

Hi there,     Since I began my healthy hair journey I have learnt a lot about my hair, but with  each passing day and with more blogs and vlogs I visit, I find that there is still a whole lot more to learn. I'll like to share a few of the things I've learnt so far with you.   Did you know:    Water is the best moisturiser for your natural hair?   The best hair moisturisers have water as the first (or one of the first five) ingredients?   Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can actually penetrate your hair shaft?   Coconut oil can protect your hair from loosing protein during handling, combing and washing? Shampoos with sulphates are extremely drying and should be used rarely or not at all? Combing your hair too much can chip away protein from your hair making it prone to breakage? Hair should be combed damp never dry or dripping wet?   Your hair needs both protein and moisture in...

Healthy hair pratices

Hi there,   As you embark on your healthy hair journey it is important to build and maintain a  good regimen. These are what a good regimen consists of: Moisturise Water or water based leave-in conditioners are the best way to get moisture into your hair. You should moisturise daily or according to your hair needs. Seal This is when you apply a butter or oil to your already moisturised hair to prevent moisture loss. This is a very important step and should not be skipped. Oils like Castor, Olive ,Almond ,Coconut oil are great for sealing. Condition  A conditioner helps to restore moisture to hair and it improves the condition of the hair. This is a very important step in healthy hair care. You may condition your hair weekly after each shampoo (if you use shampoos) or just wash with it as explained below. Co-wash This is when you use a conditioner to wash your hair rather than a shampoo which can dry out your hair. This can be done as much as twice...

The best way to comb your natural hair

Hi there,   Combing natural hair has always been a problem. There is a lot of pain involved but that's not the only challenge combing presents. Combing your hair is a major cause of hair breakage, remember those balls of hair you remove from your comb each time you comb?  Here are some tips to help you minimize breakage from combing: Use the right tool  Never use a fine tooth comb for your hair. It is better to use a wide toothed comb. This will reduce hair breakage. If you must use a fine tooth comb ensure you have thoroughly detangled and combed with a wide tooth comb first. Also make sure the teeth of the comb is seamless to avoid ripping out your hair as you comb. Avoid these Much better Comb your hair only when it is damp  Your hair is weakest when it is dripping wet and so combing it then will cause it to break. On the other hand combing your hair when it is dry will also break it off because your hair is not as flexible as...
