COCONUT OIL AND YOUR HAIR

Hi there,
No black hair forum is complete without the mention of Coconut oil. A lot has been said about the many benefits of coconut oil for the hair especially with regard to nourishing, conditioning, prepooing and sealing. So what makes coconut oil so great for your hair? For one thing coconut oil is the only oil that can penetrate the hair shaft to the extent that it can. According to several studies coconut oil reduces protein loss in the hair. Hair is made of protein but the daily rigors posed on hair in the form of washing, combing ,touching and rubbing against fabric  tend to wear down the fibre of the hair. Coconut oil  penetrates the hair shaft and forms a protective coat which protects the hair from being chipped away over time . This is great news for black hair which is notoriously fragile. Coating hair with coconut oil before we shampoo prevents the hair strands from absorbing too much water which makes the hair more liable to breakage. Keep in  mind though that although coconut oil penetrates into the hair shaft and helps to prevent protein loss within the hair strand it is not a protein so it cannot replace the protein that has been lost if the hair has already been damaged. When used as a hot oil treatment, coconut oil is wonderful as it strengthens hair from the inside not just from outside.
Another thing about coconut oil  is that it also  protects both natural and relaxed hair from the damaging rays of the sun, how cool is that?

Benefits of coconut oil:

Strengthens hair thus reducing wear and tear and the resultant breakage
Treats and conditions your scalp eliminating dandruff and dry scalp
A good sealant
Can be used to thin heavier oils like castor
Can be used  as a prepoo treatment
Added to regular conditioner for a deeper conditioning treatment

As a hot oil treatment:
Warm some coconut oil either by itself or mixed with other oils of your choice(castor oil is my favourite). You can put the oil in a little can and place that in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes to warm it up. Do not heat it too much as hot oil can damage  hair and burn you. Apply it to your damp  hair and massage it in from your roots to your tips (massaging  your scalp  helps stimulate hair growth) then cover with a shower cap or plastic bag. Sit under a hairdryer with low heat for 15-20 mins. As an alternative You can also wrap the shower cap with a warm towel. Warm up a towel by either putting it in a microwave for 30 secs or wetting  it with hot water and wringing out the excess water (my go to method ).Some people like to put on a shower cap and allow their body heat do the work although it takes a longer time. Some choose to do it overnight also. After the allotted time, shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

As a prepoo
Apply coconut oil on its own or as a mixture onto dry hair then put on a shower cap for upwards of 30 mins(I do mine overnight). Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

As sealant
After moisturising your hair apply a little coconut oil to your palms and rub it all over your hair concentrating on your ends or tips.

I made a bottle of coconut oil this week and I'll share my method with you next.

  2. Coconut oil is the truth! I've been doing the Indian Oiling Method with it for almost 3 months and on my last wash, I only lost two strands of hair with the roots attached and I felt I should shed more naturally. No breakage. A first for my fine strands.

How to create a a sleek faux bun with short natural hair!!!!

Hi people!    So its been a while since my last post and I apologize. I have been all kinds of busy but I have got something really cool for you all today. I haven't really done any hairstyle posts on this blog  because in my bid to retain length I just cornrow and throw on a wig. I have been doing that for months with the random Afro-puff thrown in once in awhile but this week I just wasn't  in the mood for any of my wigs. I decided to finally do something I have been dying to do: a faux bun!! Its super easy just follow the steps below and you'll be rocking your faux bun in a couple of minutes :-)                                                                                                Preparing my hair I stretched my hair with my cornrows first. I took out the braids then moisturised and sealed: My stretched hair  I sectioned my hair into 2 parts. I started from the front section. I added some Ecostyler gel, brushed it lightly with a toothbrush and pulled
